A new tactile navigation marker is designed to help people with visual impairments find their way around campus and is part of a comprehensive concept to further improve accessibility at LMU.
LMU Munich has installed a new tactile navigation marker that facilitates access to the so-called Lehrturm on Professor-Huber-Platz. The sign provides a tactile overview of the building complex and is intended to assist people with visual impairments in particular with orientation.
The marker is the first prototype in an LMU-wide concept for tactile signage, which is to be implemented step by step. After a test phase in which users can provide feedback, the plan is to equip other buildings with similar orientation aids. The first area to be upgraded will be the city center, as this is where the faculties with the most visually impaired students are located.
The project is funded as part of the Bayern Barrierefrei 2023 special program. The aim of the initiative is to make the LMU campus more barrier-free and accessible for all members of the university in the long term.
The supplementary ground guidelines and areas of concern are currently being coordinated with the City of Munich. The historic preservation authorities have also approved the project. With the new stele, LMU is sending another signal for the continuous expansion of accessibility at its locations.
